“The armchair comfort of Fauvism stems from its serene balance. On the Fauve canvas art and nature, radicality and tradition achieve a short-lived truce, a moment of peaceful co-existence that is perhaps more the exception than the rule in the history of the avant-garde. The colors and brushwork deployed in these paintings are often shockingly bright and brusque. Inspired by the innovations of Seurat, Gauguin and van Gogh, the artists were clearly drunk on the purely visual possibilities of paint, color and surface.”
