 Description: Paperback. 8vo, green printed wraps, 5-32 pp, illustrations, very good. Heyward Shepherd was a Black man who worked as a railroad porter and lived in Winchester, VA with his family. When John Brown's raiders were crossing the bridge into Harpers Ferry that fateful night, they encountered Shepherd and shot him to death after he refused to follow their orders. The citizens of Winchester were outraged by this and set up a fund for his family.
