As a prologue, the occurrence of discrimination by Brahmins, the decadence of Brahmins, and the anticipation of people waiting for a new teaching are recounted.
-In the middle of a blizzard, a monk collapses, and a bear, a rabbit, and a fox find him. The bear gives the monk a fish, the fox gives him nuts, but the rabbit has nothing to bring, so it jumps into the fire and gives itself to the monk, ascending to heaven as a deity.
Goshara, Ashita's master, attains enlightenment through this experience.
Ashita instructs his disciple Naradatta to find a great person who can solve the mystery of why the rabbit burned himself. Naradatta goes to the city and hears about Tatta.
