◎ Moscow Olympics
The 1980 Moscow Olympics (the 22nd Summer Olympics) was held at Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Soviet Union.

This was the first Olympics held in a communist and socialist country after World War II.

Under the Cold War conditions between the registered Western and Eastern countries in the IOC, this event occurred in the Soviet Union, which was a leading power among Eastern Bloc nations. In protest against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan that occurred in December 1979, the United States advocated a boycott to the Western nations. This led to a collective boycott just two months before the opening, with many countries, including Japan, opting not to participate.

178 Japanese athletes, who had spent the previous four years preparing for the Moscow Olympics, found themselves in tears just before the event as they had no choice but to withdraw. This event raised questions about the relationship between “sports and politics.”

◎ About Misha the Bear.
Misha the Bear is the mascot character of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The character was designed by the children's book author Viktor Chizhikov. At the closing ceremony of the Moscow Olympics, a giant Misha doll holding balloons appeared in the stadium, and at the end of the ceremony, the doll was released with balloons, floating away into the sky, which was a memorable sight.
