The 1980 Olympics were held at Lenin Stadium in Moscow, Soviet Union (the 22nd Summer Olympics). This was the first time for the Olympics to be held in a socialist country after World War II.

Under the tension of the Cold War between Western and Eastern countries, the event was held in the Soviet Union, which was a leader among Eastern bloc countries. In response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 1979, the United States advocated for a boycott among Western nations. This led to a collective boycott just two months before the opening, with many countries including Japan deciding not to participate.

The 178 Japanese athletes who had been preparing for four years for the Moscow Olympics were left in tears as they had to withdraw just before the event. This was a significant moment that questioned the relationship between sports and politics.

Misha is the mascot character of the 1980 Moscow Olympics. The bear was designed by illustrator Viktor Chizikov. At the closing ceremony of the Moscow Olympics, a giant Misha balloon appeared in the stadium, and at the very end, the balloon was released and flew away, creating a memorable scene.
