Originally the Pawnee Railroad chartered in 1890. In 1905 The Chicago Edison Co. (Commonwealth Edison after merger with Commonwealth Electric) headed by Samuel Insull acquired the Pawnee RR in conjunction with Illinois Midland Coal Company. Headquartered in Chicago, the railroad ran until 1996, with a maximum of 119.7 route miles in 1930. Dieselization began in 1955. Principal cities served were Peoria, Pekin, Havana and Springfield with connections to many other roads. It still runs today as the Illinois and Midland Railroad.
