African American] [Literature] Snyder, Howard. Earth Born: A Novel of the Plantation. New York/London: The Century Co.. First Edition, First Printing, Hardcover with NO Dust Jacket, 1929. 264 pages, measures 5.25" 7.5".
A novel that "takes us among the daily rounds of plantation negro life," by an author who "understands the plantation negro as few white men have ever done." The dialect-dialogue is colloquial and the jacket-blurb writers emphasize the story's "scenes of sinful love, barbaric revelry, and ecstatic religious fervor," along with the "crude joys, dark superstitions, primitive cruelties, and weird tragedies." The author seems to have been a bit of a wunderkind: the Library of Congress has him born in 1909, which would have made him only twenty when this book was published, and only eighteen at the time his first novel, "Dirt Roads," appeared in 1927
