No doubt many if us are familiar with the old fable starring the industrious ant and the slack off grasshopper who eventually paid the price with no food for the winter. This antique lithograph portrays that in a human setting. It is in wonderful condition being that it’s 140 years old. The spelling the artist E. Metzmacher used for Grasshopper is interesting.

The piece shows a young lady (grasshopper) begging at the door of another woman (ant), while a dog growls angrily at her feet. You can see the quaint village laid out in the background. On the bottom of the step is the artist name and dated 1869, however near the title above the artist signature you see copyrighted 1881 by George Barrie. My apologies for the last 3 photos. I will retake upon request. Measures 16 inches tall and 13 inches wide. $224 ~Enjoy!
