First edition, first printing hardcover copy of Big Sur by Jack Kerouac (Farrar, Straus & Cudahy, 1962). Rare true first edition of this class of Beat literature. Fictionalized autobiographical novel which echoes Kerouac’s own physical and mental decline following the success of his acclaimed, On the Road. Heavily worn jacket now protected in new (removable) archival sleeve. Large tear to bottom of front dj cover. Heavy scuffing to front cover and spine with some tears. Another jacket or piece of paper appears to have been stuck to the jacket leaving blemishes behind. Boards slightly bowed and with corners bumped. Cocked spine though binding remains fairly firm. Liquid damage to top edge of text block causing waviness and some staining. Previous owner’s inscription to fep. See photos for condition.
