BODY BUTTER Body Butter 90's Metal Ring Semi-Flare Denim

BODY BUTTER was established in 1996 by Maiko Sasao and Junko Kurahashi, both graduates of the Bunka Fashion College. The concept was to create clothing that is as familiar and impactful as butter when worn.

After graduating from Bunka Fashion College, Sasao went to New York and was contracted as a designer for Liquid Sky, a Brazilian street brand conceived by DJ Razor, who was based in SoHo at the time. Influenced by music, art, extreme sports, and the underground rave culture inspired by Bjork and Jean Paul Gaultier, her designs gained a following. Young, famous actors and influencers were on the Liquid Sky staff, and she was noticed by Patricia Field, the stylist for SEX AND THE CITY, becoming known within street and underground culture.

After returning to Japan, she started BODY BUTTER with Kurahashi. They participated in Tokyo Collection, and their edgy and avant-garde designs gained popularity, leading to the opening of a shop in Daikanyama. In 2005, the brand was rebranded for men, but later, the two designers resigned after being acquired by an external company. Currently, they are running a company that sells pet goods and food.

The brand was very popular at the shop Sculpture, which early on carried FOTUS and the London shoe brand Buffalo LONDON. Using rigid denim, the design, influenced by Gaultier and rave culture, features numerous punk and fetishistic metal rings as accents. The bold patchwork pattern and the slightly flared silhouette that shapes the legs are a very well-crafted piece.
