The University of Michigan Wolverines football team had a successful decade in the 1990s, with head coach Gary Moeller leading the team to numerous conference championships and bowl game appearances. During the 1990 season, the Wolverines finished with a record of 9-3 and defeated Mississippi in the Gator Bowl. The following year, Michigan finished 10-2 and won the Big Ten championship before losing to Washington in the Rose Bowl. The team continued its success in the mid-1990s, including an undefeated season in 1992 that culminated in a Rose Bowl victory over Washington. In 1997, under the leadership of head coach Lloyd Carr, the Wolverines won their first national championship since 1948, finishing the season with a record of 12-0 after defeating Washington State in the Rose Bowl.
