First American edition, first printing hardcover copy of The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien (Houghton Mifflin, 1977). True first state with errors: “Father Giles” on bibliography instead of “Farmer Giles” & broken type on page 229. The indispensable companion to the beloved high fantasy series, The Lord of the Rings. With fold-out map that remains attached to rear endpaper. Jacket is now protected in mylar sleeve but previously experienced moderate rubbing to covers and shelf wear around the edges - including chipping, small tears and creases. Jacket is mildly tanned on the whole. Boards faintly blemished with corners and spine ends bumped. Subtle liquid staining and waviness to top fore corner of many pages, otherwise all pages are clean and unmarked though tanned. Binding is beginning to loosen a bit but spine is straight and hinges remain secure. See photos for condition.
