60’s Avant-Garde Feminist Artist Writer Therese Schwartz’s New York Times collage of acrylic on newspaper from June 15, 1972, titled “pink shriver” featuring New York Times “clippings of front pages of the newspaper...obliterated words and banners atop banners...a transition from words to ‘all out’ visual...(her) New York Times paintings were only partly legible, washed over with acrylic...leaving archeological remains. No more words. No more literal messages.” In a way, she was the first to call out the “fake news” of the media. Most all of her work is no longer accounted for. She was an early Feminist artist among the likes of Judy Chicago and Hannah Wilke. Her most famous works include her 1971 four part essay in Art in America, “The Politicization of the Avant-Garde.” Schwartz was a Native New Yorker, who grew up in a politicized Upper Middle Class New York Socialist-Jewish radical home, Bernie Sandersish.
