William Ewart GLADSTONE FIRST HOME RULE BILL (Government of Ireland 1886) Print

This is a Wood Engraving / illustration / print that has been taken from a book dated 1894 and is ready for framing. Measures approximately 11 1/2 x 9 inches.
The First Home Rule Bill, also known as the Government of Ireland Bill 1886, was the first major attempt by a British government to enact a law creating home rule for part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Introduced by Prime Minister William Gladstone, the bill aimed to establish a separate Irish legislature while reserving many powers, including taxation, to the British Parliament at Westminster. The bill was designed to grant self-government and national autonomy to the whole of Ireland, reversing the Act of Union (1800).
