VIRGIL AENEID Aeneas Telling Story Dido of Carthage Art by Pierre-Narcisse Guérin

This is an illustration / print that has been taken from a book dated 1902 and is ready for framing. Measures approximately 11 1/2 x 9 inches. There is an image text summary on the attached rice paper.

..... Queen Dido of Carthage has asked Aeneas to tell the story of his wanderings and the fall of Troy. Aeneas dominates the scene: The company cannot take their eyes off him in his elevated place of honour, spellbound by his presence and the dignified emotion with which he speaks. The story of Dido and Aeneas is a tale of love, duty, and fate. Aeneas, the Trojan hero, meets Dido, the noble Queen of Carthage, and they fall in love. However, Aeneas is reminded of his duty to found a new city, and he leaves Dido, causing her despair. This story is based on Book IV of Virgil’s epic poem, the Aeneid .
