Broderick Crawford is a tender-hearted, disillusioned bum on an adventuresome trek through Mexico. His wanderings one Sunday bring him into a Church in a village so poor that the church, that runs an orphanage, is under severe political and financial pressure, and may soon close. He becomes the caretaker. Because of his drinking and amoral behavior, he is accused of stealing a religious image (the littlest angel) and is dismissed from the convent. He is befriended by a little girl that helps him change his ways and come back into unforeseen treasure. He decides to take the money back to the convent and have the sisters raise the little girl. Upon his return, the little girl disappears and the statue re-appears.
