About the piece: Impressive lidded rectangular footed vegetable bowl has scalloped corners and unusual impressed detailing with hand painted floral design at handles and lid knob. Fully printed inside and out in dark Royal blue / Zaffres blue on cream earthenware. Gadroon borders. Backstamp dates it between 1970-1989. About 12” long, 9.25” wide, 2.5” deep for serving, 6” high with lid. Made in England. PLEASE NOTE: Imperfection at one handle which must have happened at production, since it is glazed over (see detail) otherwise excellent no condition issues.
About the pattern: introduced in 1814, the “Tower” pattern (sometimes referred to as “Spode’s Tower”) pictures the Ponte Salerno bridge near Rome. It was derived from a book by Merigot 'Views of Rome and its Vicinity' published c1796-1798). It was produced until about 2008 and adorns a wide variety of items including dishes and housewares.
