African Antique Ashanti Kudo Asante Bronze Tribal Lidded Urn Pot, Bronze Cast
Production period- Before 1890, 1890 to 1919
Approximately 10” tall x 4” diameter (6-1/2 with handles)

The Asante or Ashanti live in central Ghana in the rainforests of West Africa approximately 150 miles away from the coast. The Ashanti are a major ethnic group of the Akans (Ashanti and Fanti) in Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast.

The Ashanti are best known for their royal arts . . . staffs, lost-wax cast gold jewelry, gold weights and bronze/brass items using the lost wax process like this Kuduo.

Ornate, cast brass/bronze vessels/pots (Kuduo) were the possessions of kings and courtiers in the Akan kingdoms. Gold dust and nuggets were kept in the Kuduo, as were other items of personal value and significance.
