Early 19th Century
Popular Circa 1825
English Georgian Brass Chimney Horse
Often mistaken for doorstops.
Their true original purpose was to stand, as decorative ornaments, on either the hearth or fireplace mantel.
A nod to the nobles which played such an important prominent role in everyday life in days gone by.
Popular throughout the nineteenth century, it has been suggested that their stance was inspired by the Quadriga which stood on the loggia of Saint Mark’s Basilica in Venice.
Whence they were reinstated following the defeat of Napoleon in 1815.
