A gold washed button worn by Massachusetts Militia units during the Civil War. The button was excavated from the Wilderness Battlefield in Virginia.
The Wilderness, near Fredericksburg, Virginia, was the first battle in 1864 between General Grant’s “Army of the Potomac” and General Lee’s “Army of Northern Virginia”. It was the beginning of what would be called Grant’s “Overland Campaign” to take the Confederate capitol at Richmond.
Note; A slight push on face and a small section of rim missing.
The button measures 7/8”.
The artifact comes as shown in a 3” x 4” riker style case.
