The fact that this was a big deal hit home as I pulled into the parking garage. I was not thinking about the first plane at all, but more focusing on what I had to do that day.

The things I had to do that day, the things I did, really made no impact on my life, or the lives of others, that I could ever see. I hadn't, at that time, determined that my job really was entirely unnecessary. Or, if it WAS necessary, it was necessary only because people are terrible to each other.

I was-- am-- a lawyer. Nowadays I say I'm a consumer protection lawyer but as of September 11, 2001, it was more accurate to say that I was a criminal and family lawyer, criminal and family law being two area of law that have an abundance of clients and thus are easy for novice lawyers to break into.

The reason I began, much later, to see my job as being unnecessary, was I think because I had at the time begun to question whether I made a difference in people's lives.
