This is a French indigo smock shirt I purchased from a vintage shop in Tokyo.
It is based on a smock called BIAUDE that was worn as formal attire by horse traders and shepherds from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
It was a workwear garment designed to protect against dirt.
This is a French-made, pullover-style indigo cotton smock.

Most BIAUDE s made at the time were made of linen fabric dyed indigo, but this one is made of cotton.
It is probably from the 1930s-1940s.
It is a rare item made by the manufacturer Braillon.
I originally purchased it as deadstock and have worn it a few times since then, but there is no wear and tear and the overall condition is good.
