This Prince “Purple Rain” 45 rpm GOLD award is extremely rare. Why?
My father, Ken Kittinger (Google - Ken Kittinger Gold Records) was the premier GOLD/PLATINUM record awards designer and maker for 50 years. He was based on Music Row in Nashville and made thousands of awards for virtually every record label in the U.S. and abroad.
This PRINCE 45 is unique in that Warner Brothers ordered the GOLD single award in September, 1984, nearly a year after it was recorded and released as a single in August, 1983. Then the album released a year after the single ended up being iconic and one of the biggest selling albums of all time. RIAA has certified Purple Rain as a “Diamond” 13X for U.S. sales only. Worldwide, millions more have been sold and are still selling.
TRIVIA: Purple Rain was originally intended to be a country song. It was revealed after Prince's passing that the instrumental track was given to Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks and Prince asked her to create lyrics,
