Rare set of 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniel original (Hundeplatte) Dog Plates. Lekven Design. Fine European Porcelain. Made in Denmark. 7.61 . Dishwasher and microwave safe. Plates are fired at a high temperature in a special kiln at 1250 degrees centigrade. The firing process takes approximately 24 hours as it is the only way of achieving the exquisite blue underglaze quality. The dogs are shown in their unique surrounding giving meaning and atmosphere to the plate. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are in many paintings in the laps of the aristocrats of Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries. It is said Mary Queen of Scots walked with her King Cavalier Spaniel to her execution under her skirt. King Charles II was seldom seen without 2 or 3 at his heels. He was so fond of his little dogs, he wrote a decree that the spaniels should be accepted in any public space, even in the Houses of Parliament where animals were not usually permitted. The decree is still in existence today.
