A 19th century blue hand painted floral opaline glass vase that is in excellent antique condition. Likely Portieux Vallerysthal, it is a hand blown substantial vessel, that measure approximately five inches tall. It could use a light cleaning, but there are no damages or repairs to report.

Opaline is a type of colored glass that is semi-opaque and was made to resemble porcelain using bone ash as well as metal oxides for the color. When held up to light it shows its translucency, and gives opaline its nickname “fire glass. Mid-19th century opaline was made by hand, using free-blowing techniques. The surface is smooth with no seam marks from a mold although the separate pieces like the bowl and stem may have been blown separately then fused together.
