This 16”x 20” picture was taken in Orlando, Florida on October 24, 1981, when Van Halen opened for The Rolling Stones.
Although a security guard confiscated my forbidden camera when I entered the concert, it was miraculously returned to me minutes later.
Several times that day, Eddie climbed up about four feet above the stage and jumped. I was lucky to get just one shot of him frozen in mid air. During that fraction of a second, one of the greatest guitarists in rock and roll history looks just like a high-hurdler gasping for breath at the Hard Rock Olympics.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame used this picture on the cover of its “Visitor Planning Guide” and on roadside billboards in the Cleveland area. From 2016 to 2019, this picture of Eddie Van Halen greeted every visitor to The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s website.
When Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame used this image in its farewell memorial on social media.
