When Legos with elaborate decals first began to appear, I had mixed feelings about them. Sure, they had totally nifty images and designs and motifs. But they just didn't embody the essence of the Legos of my childhood.
I've mostly been won over because, well, they are whimsical and clever and often extremely useful. And if I decide that I want to play with only the basic shapes, that's easy-peasy. I just give the ones with decals some time off.
