Fraxinus pennsylvanica, often known as the green ash or red ash is a species of ash native of eastern and central North America, it can be found from Nova Scotia west to southeast Alberta and eastern Colorado, south to northern Florida, and southwest to Oklahoma and eastern Texas. In a large portion of the western United States, it has spread and naturalized.
It is the American ash that is most widely dispersed; its range is primarily in the Great Plains and Midwest. Stream banks and bottomlands make up almost all the green ash's natural habitat. Large seed crops provide as a source of food for various wild animals.
One of the most used ornamental trees in the United States, and much of Canada—including western regions where it is not native—is the green ash. Argentina has a sizable planting of it as well. Due of its attractive appearance and good form, it is particularly well-liked. It is frequently planted as a windbreak or for shade.
