You may or may not know this, but Impressionism as a painting style is both the essence and the antithesis of the Industrial Revolution. The Impressionist 19th-century painting style of light and movement and color was a reaction to the anguished greyness of deafening factories. Impressionism -- with its continual celebration of the vibrance and joy of the natural world -- was a last, plangent cry against the industrialization of the world.
But Impressionism was also entirely dependent on the new technologies to which industrialization gave birth. Impressionist painters were the first generation of artists to be able to begin and finish a painting in the field. An artist could spend all day among waterlily ponds with amazing novel colors of paints, paints that were protected from drying out by newly developed metal tubes.
Impressionism would not have been needed except for the Industrial Revolution. It would not have been possible without it.
