In the wake of the romantic historians who at the beginning of the 19th century rehabilitated antiquity and the Middle Ages, David Roberts, a Scottish painter, undertook the journey that would take him to Egypt and the Holy Land. Like Géricault, he will bring back more than 300 sketches from which he will draw with his team 247 lithographs.The resulting work, The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia will be his life's work.Published between 1842 and 1849, this collection, composed of nearly 250 lithographs divided into six volumes, constitutes a masterpiece of color lithography. The lithographs are then enhanced by hand under the direction of the artist.
