The artist stated about this photograph While roaming through New York's Lower Eastside, an area of people of mixed ethnic backgrounds, I came across this fruit stand and seller on Orchard Street, a colorful thoroughfare of shops. He looked like a must for a shot with his belly and cigar.
Erika Stone was a member of the legendary Photo League and was a stringer for both Time and Der Spiegel magazines.
Stone was one of twenty women photographers whose work was published in an anthology Women of Vision in 1982.
