The full phrase mark on the back side of the plate: "SUSLER CINI KÜTAHYA TÜRK MALI" indicates that the plate is a Turkish-made çini (ceramic) piece from Kütahya by Süsler Çini. In Kütahya pottery, calligraphy is a highly valued form of ornamentation, frequently used for transcribing verses from the Quran. The calligraphy in the image is in the center of the plate, surrounded by a floral design, and the inscription appears to be the word "Basmala" in Arabic calligraphy which is short for the the Islamic phrase "Bismallahir Rahmanir Rahim" which means "in the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful".
