Remarkable & intriguing hand-colored photograph family portrait Victorian era

Large, remarkable and intriguing hand-colored photograph, family portrait from the Victorian era.Rather large it gathers no less than 10 figures, eight female and two male. Based on the narrow sleeves of the lady's dresses, this photograph must have been taken around 1885. It might be a family portrait, with the mother (and widow) sitting in the middle (recognizable by her more elaborate and richer outfit, her gloves and her hat). She is surrounded by what is presumably her offspring, the two or three older female figures on the right possibly being aunties. What is striking about this picture is the strange facial expression most of these people have, especially the two men, who look horrified or disgusted by something. All of them are staring at a point to their right. What can they possibly be looking at?In stark contrast with the rest of the group, a lady standing in the middle of the back row looks in the opposite direction (to her left), seeming totally detached from what is going on and lost in some deep daydream. The photograph is enhanced by exquisitely done hand-coloring in shades of gray, sepia and bright white. These added colors, especially the white that is so vivid that it feels almost fluorescent, give the picture an intensity that makes it look even more eerie and mysterious.Dimensions: frame, 21" ½ by 17"¾, view, 19" ¼ by 15" ¾.Excellent antique condition. Frame is quite sturdy.
