There have been an extraordinary number of words written in attempts to define and categorize architectural follies ranging, as they do, from elaborate aviaries to enormous sham castles and taking in towers, columns, reproductions of Greek and Roman temples and amphitheatres, obelisks, summerhouses, castle-sheds, houses, arches, and just about everything else on the way. In making the attempt to define the undefinable, many scholars have tended to overlook the element of eccentricity, which is an integral part of every folly builder's personality.
