Paul Pennisi (1930–2018) was an Italian artist renowned for his geometric landscapes and secular icons that blend architectural precision with Byzantine artistic traditions. Born into a noble Sicilian family in Acireale, he studied architecture at the University of Rome, which influenced his structured compositions. In 1964, Pennisi moved to Thessaloniki, Greece, where he immersed himself in Byzantine iconography, particularly the techniques of Mount Athos monasteries. This experience inspired his use of gold leaf and natural pigments, leading to his creation of secular icons characterized by geometric forms and the absence of human figures.
