Psychoanalysis, Creativity, and Literature: a French-American Inquiry
by Alan Roland

hardcover in good used condition

.... a series of essays that consider the context and substance of each movement in its respective country. The papers in this volume were first delivered at a comprehensive series of symposia cosponsored by the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis and New York University, entitled A Franco-American Dialogue: Self and Culture Today, held at New York University in May, 1976. What emerges are detailed portraits of two very different movements: French psychoanalysis, able to break through narrow medical orthodoxy and become closely associated with philosophy, linguistics, literature, and structural anthropology; and American psychoanalysis, more medically oriented and far less trans-disciplinary, yet less exclusively committed to Freud and thus open to pioneering new theories and observations.
