First printing with number line beginning with 2 (which in 1982 signified a Random House first printing). Signed by James A. Michener on the limitation signature page. The book is tight and square with solid hinges and binding, and clean silver boards. Light creases to spine ends and top back corner. The textblock is clean with no writing, bookplate, or markings and not BCE, ex-library, or remaindered. Faint bottom tip creases to pages 551-552. Illustrated color endpapers. No dust jacket as issued. Black cardboard slipcase has light shelf wear, else fine. 622 pages. 6½ X 9½ tall.
