Stegosaurus stenops skull fossil cast replica-dinosaurs-paleontology

This is a solid resin cast of the skull from the Jurassic armored dinosaur, Stegosaurus stenops. Stegosaurus means roofed lizard as this animal was named after the unique bony dorsal plates adorning its neck, back, and tail. These plates were in fact modified scutes ( dermal bone), as were the 4 deadly spikes located near the end of the tail. The function of the plates is unknown, though they were delicate and heavily vascularized leading many scientists to believe they could have been used in display or thermoregulation. The plates could have had a defensive function as well, the predators living alongside this animal didn't have the bone crushing teeth of Tyrannosaurs so even these relatively thin plates probably offered some protection aside from making the animal appear more imposing. However, blood loss from the plates could be extensive if injured. Stegosaurus is considered a low browsing herbivore but may have temporarily stood on its hind legs to reach higher plant matter.
