Antique Victorian Silverplate Cake Basket with Handle - Grecian Lady Design

Dating to the late 1890s or so, the Victorian Aesthetic movement, may I offer this splendidly engraved ruffled silverplate cake stand with swing handle. Featuring a Grecian lady, a lot of florals and foliage as well as cutwork to the top of the stand, the edges are upraised as well as scalloped. The base is a little less ornate than the top but there is still a profusion of ivy and florals amongst 4 pedestal feet. Due to the tarnish, the photos are the best I can do but I think they give you an idea of just how stunning this piece is.Condition: First off, the piece was completely black when found so I didn't know if the piece would polish up or not sooooo, I polished the top. And yes, as you can see, the silver is still there. However, after my arm gave out, I decided to stop, hence all the black tarnish showing on the underside and on the base.Metal Content: SilverplateHallmarks: 0831 E&H Mfg Co Toronto on one of the bottom legs.Size: Height with the handle up is about 16"; width at the top is 11-1/4" and a bit.Weight: 1661 grams or about 53 ounces.Final Comments: A little elbow grease will bring up more of the original silver finish or put in a little $$ to get the piece replated - this is one piece of Victorian silverplate deserving of the process.
