Thomas Chatterton, an English poet, died on August 24, 1770, at the age of 17. His death was a result of suicide, which he committed after facing exposure for his literary forgeries. Chatterton self-medicated with laudanum and suffered an unintentional overdose, rather than dying from starvation or lack of money. Some accounts suggest he poisoned himself with arsenic. His tragic end has made him a symbol of the struggles faced by young artists and poets.
