Samuel Kirk & Son was known in some circles as “America’s Oldest Silversmith.” From 1815 to 1979, Kirk was fully autonomous, a crafter of beautiful coin and sterling silver tableware, flatware, and more. In 1979, the Stieff Company acquired Samuel Kirk & Son Co.; the old Kirk Avenue factory’s operations were suspended. All business was moved to the new Stieff site in Baltimore’s Hampden section (primarily comprised of 36th Street and known to the locals as “The Avenue”). Since 1892, before its acquisition of Kirk, the Stieff Company had been a Baltimore-based manufacturer of silver and pewter. After its purchase of Kirk, the firm continued to produce Kirk’s product lines, albeit under the new name: The merged businesses became known as the Kirk-Stieff Company.
