A. E. Hotchner was Hemingway's close friend, editor, traveling companion, and close confidant from 1948 until the novelist's death in 1961. Hotchner writes of the affair that destroyed Hemingway's first marriage, the truth of his romantic life in Paris, and how he lost Hadley. Hotchner also reveals the aspects of each literary woman Hemingway later created.
