THIS Khanjira is a valuable ANTIQUE.
I purchased it in Bombay (Mumbai) in 1975.
Admired for its skilled craftsmanship, this Khahjira’s circular frame was carved from one piece of handpicked, high quality walnut wood.
Research and notice that...
Modern Khanjiras lack the artful consciousness towards detail, specially as seen at the junction of the lizard skin to the wood. Flawless!
This traditional and vintage drum head was made using the skin of the now endangered Bengal Monitor lizard - protected by the 1972 Wildlife Protection Act. (Goat skin is presently used in the modern Khanjira.)
The Khanjira (kanjira, khanjira, khanjiri or ganjira), is a frame drum instrument classical to South India. As a folk and bhajan instrument, it has been used in India for many centuries.
(See Kanjira Solo by Ganesh Kumar, YouTube)
Circa: hand-crafted much earlier than 1970s
Size: 6.70” in diameter;
7” including jingles.
