This was the violation of the Communist USSR pact with Germany to not attack but to split up Eastern Europe after the war. The invasion would be a disaster for Germany and Russia. With Germany failing to defeat Russia (yay) and Russia eventually losing 4/5ths of the entire male population. Seriously, 80 percent of all Russian men born around 1923 were dead by 1945.
