Johnson Bros was founded in1883 in Hanley, England, by the Johnson family (Alfred, Frederick, and Henry Johnson) and has been known for producing durable earthenware and later fine china that was affordable for middle-class families. Initially focused on semi-porcelain (a durable but elegant alternative to fine china), which was a big success. By the 20th century, they expanded into exporting globally, especially to the United States, making their wares a staple in homes around the world.
The Blue Willow design was introduced by Johnson Brothers in the early 20th century. While Johnson Brothers was not the first to produce the pattern, their rendition became one of the most iconic and widely recognized. Blue Willow is a transferware pattern depicting a romanticized Asian landscape with pagodas, a bridge, a willow tree, and two doves (symbolizing a legend of star-crossed lovers). The design originated in England around 1780.
