I get asked may times how do you raise a stone cabochon in a bezel cup or bezel setting. I have for many years used Oak wood powder for this purpose. Pack the bezel with the powder and then place your cabochon into the bezel and lightly press down. The Oak powder will compress some and act as a shock absorber for the stone should it get banged or hit. Using your bezel setting tool or cupped stone setter stamp crimp the bezel edge over the stone cabochon. This powder works for opaque cabochons, but should you have a transparent or translucent stone place tin foil or any reflective material over the Oak powder before pressing the stone down into the bezel. You will appreciate the durability of the Oak powder for this purpose.
