Period of Circulation: This coin was part of Ireland's pre-decimal currency and was in circulation from 1928 until 1969, ceasing to be legal tender after decimalization in 1971.
Composition: Initially, the threepence was struck in nickel (1928-1940), known for its durability. Due to nickel shortages and increased cost during World War II, the composition was changed to cupronickel (75% copper, 25% nickel) from 1942 onwards.
