The shallot is a member of the onion family, a very hardy biennial grown as an annual. Its bulbs have a more delicate flavor than most onions. Shallots are cool-weather vegetables usually. Shallots should be spring planted in very cold areas or in the fall in milder winter zones.
This cluster will spread out more than a garlic bulb and therefore requires more space between plants. Shallots will be ready to lift when the tops fall over, similar to onions. Shallots mature in about 100 days, but they can be dug any time they reach a usable size.

Light: Full sun is ideal, but plants can grow in part shade.
